Katak est un jeune béluga vivant paisiblement dans les eaux du fleuve Saint-Laurent au Canada. Moqué par ses camarades à qui il ne ressemble pas, il cherche le réconfort auprès de sa mère qu’il ne quitte pas. Pourtant, lorsqu'il apprend que sa grand-mère mourante voudrait revoir son amour de jeunesse, il part en cachette à sa recherche tout au nord, vers la Grande Banquise.
